Tristan: What was your personal experience when you started incorporating more healthy fats into your diet? How were you eating prior and how did your health, mental power, and athletic ability change when you transitioned into high-fat/Ketogenic eating?

Omega Power Creamer Team: "Before crafting Omega PowerCreamer, we were all consuming the typical college diet which consisted of convenient processed snacks and low-nutrient foods. Items like low-fat yogurt, reduced-sodium chips, processed deli meats, multigrain crackers and bread, and “heart-healthy” cereals were pantry staples. Along with the majority of the population, I was tricked into thinking that I was making healthy choices based on the advertising on the box my food came in. (That should have been my first clue!)

I explored macro-counting, but felt very limited in my food choices and mentally drained from meal prepping and counting calories. This way of eating left me feeling unsatisfied after each meal, and already thinking about when I could eat next. Because of our lack of energy, we were obviously drinking a TON of coffee each day. When my brother introduced me to the butter coffee trend, I reluctantly gave it a try and was very impressed with the added energy and focus I experienced.

When I started seeing results from adding fats to my coffee, I figured I’d expand the high-fat theme into the rest of my meals. I started incorporating more healthy fats (avocados, olive oil, nut butters, seeds, eggs, fish and meat) into my diet and immediately felt more full in between meals. I went from eating every 2-3 hours to lasting up to 6-7 hours between each meal. Because I was supplying my body with enough fats to sustain my energy, I no longer felt the need to supplement my meals with excess carbs.

I actually lost the craving for carbs in general! Eating a Ketogenic diet has changed my lifestyle, making it easy to eat “off-plan”, at restaurants, and feel satisfied and satiated after each meal."

Tristan: Wow, it sounds like making the transition into a higher fat eating pattern was incredibly beneficial for your body! Tristan: I agree that there is SO much unnecessary complication on how to incorporate healthier habits into your lifestyle, especially if you are aiming to incorporate a few ketogenic building blocks into your eating patterns. Ketogenic and high fat dietary approaches have totally become mainstream, but there is still a large amount of confusion around what the health benefits are. From your perspective, what are the primary benefits of either adapting a full ketogenic lifestyle OR transitioning into a more high-fat style of eating for both athletes and the average health enthusiast?

Omega Power Creamer Team: "In the U.S. we’ve seen the dangerous effects of high carbohydrate diets and what it’s done to our country’s health as a whole. Obesity, heart disease, and inflammation can all be linked back to consuming high carbohydrate, highly processed foods. People are waking up to the fact that there needs to be a change and we are so excited at the direction society is taking in becoming more health-conscious! For us, the primary benefits of a high fat diet is that it helps limit sugar intake.

Replacing “sugar calories” with “fat and protein calories” is one of the easiest ways to improve your overall health. 

These health benefits have also been experienced by the athlete community as well. Triathletes like Mark Sisson and Ben Greenfield have long been touting the benefits of switching to high fat diets. Also, more mainstream athletes like Lebron James have altered their diet to improve athletic performance. They experience benefits like lower inflammation and increased recovery time, more energy, and better cognitive function."

Tristan: I completely agree that there are a myriad of benefits to be experienced by re-allocating more of your nutrition from carbohydrates to healthy fats for energy.

However, many Americans are still terrified to add more fats, especially saturated fats, into their diet as a result of the low-fat craze originating in the 80s and 90s. Being that the Omega Power Creamer is primarily a source of saturated fat, can you talk a bit about the physiological effects of incorporating more saturated fats into your diet? Can the fear of saturated fats clogging your arteries and causing heart attacks be put to rest, or should we still be cautious of how much saturated fat we are consuming?

Omega Power Creamer Team: "The “fear of fat” is a result of an industrialized marketing scheme developed by large corporations to make a profit. During the 50s, there was mass confusion around heart disease, when a man named Ancel Keys developed a hypothesis that saturated fats and cholesterol cause cardiovascular heart disease and should be avoided. Without solid evidence, this hypothesis was adopted by the American Heart Association in 1961. As a way to profit, the vegetable oil, grain, soybean and sugar industries also adopted this hypothesis and the marketing ploys began. These industries controlled the information coming out to the public and funded studies to confuse the record.

Thankfully, over time, there has been much counter-evidence to prove that consuming fat, in fact, does not cause such diseases. Rather, sugar and processed carbs, combined with our toxic environment and high-stress lives, cause inflammation in the body which can eventually lead to dietary disease. However, there still is real concern when consuming saturated fats. Many studies have shown that consuming saturated fats along with high carbohydrates can have negative effects and should be avoided. It seems that the general consensus in the medical community is to limit consumption of saturated fats when combined with sugar and carbs, and by all means, avoid trans fat."

Tristan: This is why I appreciate that there are so many different ways that an individual can incorporate the dietary principles of a high-fat/Ketogenic way of eating.

Yet, because there are so many styles of low carb eating that slightly resemble the framework of a Ketogenic diet such as Atkins, South Beach, etc, it can be difficult for the average person to identify exactly what a Ketogenic diet is. Can you differentiate the key facets of a Ketogenic diet that make it different from other low-carb approaches?

Omega Power Creamer Team: "The Keto diet is like Atkins on steroids. The Atkins Diet operates on a “calories-in, calories-out” approach, while the Ketogenic diet is focused more on metabolism. This metabolic state in which your body burns fat for energy is through a process known as ketosis.

When you consume carbs and sugar, they are converted into glucose, which your body burns for energy. When you are not supplying your body with glucose, it has no choice but to burn fat for energy. For many, the low-carb diet is not sustainable because they never reach a state of ketosis, therefore their body is still in carb-burning mode, yet they are not eating any carbs, so they are understandably miserable. How we fuel our bodies is really simple: either glucose or fat… and when it comes down to it, fat is the fuel that nature intended."

Tristan: The transition from a high-carb diet to a low-carb/Ketogenic approach definitely requires time, attention, and patience. Without quality sources of fats and a willingness to eat A LOT more fat than what you are used to, achieving ketosis can be challenging but not impossible. From my personal experience and the shared experiences of others, I have found that consuming high quality fats with every meal is one of the best ways to acclimate your body to burning more fat.

Can you talk about the quality, sourcing, and benefits of each ingredient?

For example, our ghee is sourced from Northern California coastal grass-finished cows. We chose to source our ghee from grass-fed cows because cattle are designed to eat fresh green grass only.
